Scandinavian Comfort, Japanese Serenity: A Family Haven

Graced by an incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere, this cosy Japandi dwelling is a depiction of tranquil living. Reminiscent of autumn, vibrant shades of terracotta and wood breathe life into the communal area. In line with the Nordic and Japanese design philosophies, a minimalist aesthetic with sleek lines is combined with  curves to create a harmonious balance between the hard and soft. Highlighting an elegant blend of form and function — a play on textures and ambience lighting of the feature walls introduces compelling depth and dimension to the space. A soothing palette of neutrals paired with cosy contemporary furnishings accentuates a classic allure while bringing about a sense of relaxation and repose. Each corner of the home is specifically curated to serve its purpose, emphasising a less-is-more approach that is the cornerstone of Japandi design. The master bedroom exudes a bright and airy atmosphere as natural sunlight permeates through the sheer day curtains, creating a perfect spot for a peaceful retreat.

Interior Designer’s Thoughts

The homeowner requested for a mix of Scandinavian and Japanese design for their home. As a family of three, they wanted an open concept plan to create a sense of spaciousness, while allowing ease of interaction among family and guests. The interior designer suggested installing built-in carpentry from the entryway to the living room for additional storage and seating, while seamlessly concealing the household shelter. The feature walls of the living room bring visual interest to the space, accompanied by a customised 3D art piece and several decor items. The original walls between one of the common bedrooms and living room were hacked down to open up the space and the room has been converted into a home office and a cosy reading nook. A bi-fold sliding door was installed to create a partial segregation that can be opened up whenever needed. Wooden fluted panels were used in both the communal area and master bedroom, carrying a consistent theme throughout the home.
